This is the starting point of Ronghua.
Ronghua is a traditional Chinese craft associated with the creation of delicate velvet and silk flowers. Dior's official Summer 2024 Men's Show page describes Ronghua as exquisite velvet flowers produced in China since the Tang dynasty (618–907), and notes that Ronghua masters worked with Dior Ateliers for the collection.
For VERDELIA, Ronghua is not simply a historical technique.
It is a starting point.
What Is Ronghua?
Ronghua is a traditional floral craft in which silk-covered materials and wire are shaped into botanical forms.
The technique allows a maker to build flowers from individual elements rather than simply printing or molding a floral pattern.
This creates something fundamentally different.
The flower has structure.
The petals have volume.
The surface catches light differently as it moves.
And because the process is performed by hand, each piece can retain subtle variations.
Why Silk?
Silk is central to the visual character of Ronghua.
It gives the flower a softness that contrasts with the underlying structure.
This contrast is one of the reasons the technique remains so visually compelling today.

That tension is also central to VERDELIA.
From Traditional Craft to Contemporary Jewelry
A traditional craft does not have to remain in its original context.
The same principle can be seen in contemporary fashion.
For Dior's Summer 2024 men's collection, Ronghua was incorporated into Stephen Jones's headwear, with Ronghua masters working closely with Dior Ateliers. Dior described the work as combining traditional Ronghua with contemporary couture knitwear.
For VERDELIA, the question is slightly different:
What happens when the flower itself becomes jewelry?

VERDELIA does not aim to reproduce traditional Ronghua objects exactly.
Instead, we look at what makes the craft interesting:
- the structure of petals
- the softness of silk
- the relationship between wire and textile
- the rhythm of botanical forms
- the patience of handwork
These elements can then become earrings, hair jewelry, pins and other wearable forms.
Ronghua becomes part of a larger botanical design language.
Beyond One Technique
Ronghua is where the story begins.
It does not have to be where it ends.
VERDELIA also explores hand-shaped metal wire, weaving, crochet-inspired structures, pearls and other textile-related techniques.
Different materials create different expressions.
Some flowers begin with silk.
Some begin with wire.
Some are built stitch by stitch.
What connects them is the belief that handmade processes can create forms that feel alive.
